Ed Wu is VP, Platform at Niantic and heads the Niantic Seattle site. He leads Niantic's real-world planet-scale technology platform utilized by Pokémon GO, Ingress, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and Niantic's future partners and products. Dr. Wu also built and leads Pokémon GO's technical team, creating the world's fastest growing mobile app ever with hundreds of millions of users that has persisted as one of the top grossing games worldwide to the present. Before helping to lead Niantic from its successful spin-out from Google, Dr. Wu developed machine learning models in ads quality at Google, received his PhD from Stanford in Physics applying Bayesian parameter estimation models to cosmological data he collected from three visits to Antarctica and the South Pole, and graduated in 2004 from UC San Diego as a triple major in Computer Engineering, Physics and Political Science.
Keynote Presentation
"Augmented Reality in the Real World: Lessons learned and key technologies for the future"
Dr. Wu will share what has been learned at Niantic over seven years of developing real-world augmented reality (AR) applications about what motivates users to engage with technology on foot, including the hundreds of millions of people who have played Pokémon GO. He will cover both the design principles and the technology that was critical to Niantic's success in the past few years, and the consequent implications for how upcoming technological advancements such as next generation cellular networks, computer vision algorithms on mobile devices and globally distributed cloud computing will be applied in practice, including some of the work that is being done to build a platform for that future at Niantic.
